What can you do in the Interview

Many recruiters now turn to organising group interviews, ranging from 6 to 16 applicants; it can save time and enable you to understand the communication, team work, leadership qualities for each interviewees.

Here are some points to factor in when you conduct an interview.
  1. Understand the position. Ask the hiring manager what the expectations of an employee are. Ask the manager to discuss soft and technical skills. Personality fit is equally important to technical skills. This will be very helpful when screening candidates.
  2. Organise the key players as quickly as possible. It is very helpful to have good timekeeping software. Recruitment software would be ideal but not necessary. Coordinating everyone's schedule will be the most time consuming effort. Make a list of everyone's availability. Narrow down 2-3 time slots where everyone is available. Contact the candidate with these time slots with a request to pick one or two. You want to secure a date and time from the candidate in order to schedule the interview as soon as possible. Keep in mind that schedules can change especially if you wait too long to pin a date down.
  3. Advise the candidate and key players of the interview details. Make sure you list the order of interviewers, day, date, time and place. It is helpful to indicate the day of the week as most managers are busy and can lose track of interview schedules. This little step can help keep the interview on track. This information is best emailed to all the participants. Of course, if any changes are made to the schedule all participants should be notified immediatley.
  4. On the date and time of the scheduled interview you want to make sure you make yourself available during the entire interview process. The candidate will apreciate being greeted by the person who coordinated the interview. If applicable, advise the candidate of any changes made to the interview schedule. Don't forget to offer the candidate something to drink.
  5. Many companies require candidates to be escorted while on the premises. Make sure you make yourself available during the entire interview process. Therefore you should not leave work until the interview is over or other arrangements have been made.
  6. Once the interview is over you will need to escort the candidate out. I always see this as an opportunity to ask the candidate what they thought of the job interview. Thank each candidate for participating in the interview.
